Centralne Warsztaty Lotnicze

20 grudnia 1918 roku rozkazem Sztabu Generalnego Wojska Polskiego powołano Centralne Warsztaty Lotnicze. Celem ich powstania było wykonywanie prac remontowych posiadanego sprzętu lotniczego (płatowce i silniki) oraz uruchamianie produkcji licencyjnej.

Zabudowania CWL mieściły się w poniemieckich warsztatach lotniczych na Polu Mokotowskim w Warszawie (filia zakładów Albatros) przejętych wraz z inwentarzem 15 listopada 1918 roku przez grupę studentów dowodzonych przez Władysława Świąteckiego. Po przekazaniu przedstawicielom Wojska Polskiego całość sprzętu była inwentaryzowana przez komisję w składzie: por.inż. Tłuchowski, por.inż. Zdzisław Zych-Płodowski, kpt. Donat Makijonek, oraz chor. Kajetana Smolińskiego.

Aby w warsztatach można było prowadzić podstawowe prace sprowadzono w drugiej połowie 1919 roku obrabiarki ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, oraz podstawowe materiały i surowce z Austrii i Czech.

Pierwszym samolotem którego produkcję licencyjną zamierzano podjąć był zmodyfikowany Hannover Roland CL.II -

W latach 1919 - 1926 zatrudnienie wahało się w granicach 250 - 1008 osób, przy czym najwyższe zatrudnienie osiągnięto podczas działań wojennych z Rosją Sowiecką w latach 1920-21. W latach wojennych wykonano 706 napraw i 680 przeglądów silników.

W latach 1919-1924 w CWL zajmowano się też produkcją śmigieł i ich sprzedażą.

Podczas trwania działań wojennych w sierpniu 1920 roku zakończono budowę pierwszej pełnej konstrukcji prototypowej w CWL - samolotu

Przez cały okres swego istnienia CWL odczuwała poważnie braki wykwalifikowanej kadry inżynierskiej. General Leveque próbował stworzyć w CWL biuro konstrukcyjne, m.in. ściągając z Francji konstruktora Dumasse. Jednakże próba ta niestety nie powiodła się.

W roku 1925 zmieniono nazwę Centralne Warsztaty Lotnicze na Centralne Zakłady Lotnicze.

Bleriot SPAD S.61C1 będącymi w trakcie produkcji i dokumetację licencyjną. W tym samym roku rozpoczęto produkcję licencyjną tych płatowców którą kontynuowano do 1929 roku w Państwowych Zakładach Lotniczych produkując łącznie ok.10 samolotów. W tym czasie świadczono również usługi remontowe tych płatowców.

Przez cały okres działalności w latach 1925-28, CZL odczuwały brak środków finansowych. Brak rentowności i chęci inwestowania ówczesnych władz wojskowych w CZL był powodem propozycji sprzedaży CZL Polskim Zakładom Skody (powstałym w 1926 roku). Lecz z powodu złego stanu nieruchomości PZSkody nie były zainteresowane zakupem.

Ostatecznie 21 grudnia 1927 roku CZL zostały wydzielone ze struktur administracji państwowej jako samodzielna jednostka produkcyjna. 1 marca 1928 roku powołano Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze które przejęły cały majątek CZL, kończąc tym działalność CZL.
